John Galliano is Leaving Maison Margiela

The news has the fashion world asking questions.

After an innovative 10 years at Maison Margiela, John Galliano has announced he is stepping down from his role as creative director, a position he took on in 2014. The British designer shared the news in a heartfelt Instagram post this morning, expressing gratitude for his time with the French fashion house.

The announcement comes as a shock to some, especially given that 2024 has been a standout year for Galliano — arguably one of the best of his entire career. His Artisanal Collection 2024 show — captivating, avant-garde and boundary-pushing — was one of his year’s most defining moments. His work at the Met Gala in May, where he created some of the event’s most memorable looks, was another major highlight.

For others, the change isn’t entirely surprising. Rumors about his potential departure had been circulating for months.

The revelation now has the fashion world speculating about the future of both Galliano and the house. As one of the most iconic designers of his generation, his exit raises questions about what comes next: Will he return to his own label or collaborate with another fashion house? And the inevitable: Who will succeed Galliano at Maison Margiela?
